ASX-listed Cokal has kicked off contractor-led mining operations at its BBM metallurgical coal project in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, with mining partner PT Harapan Mitra Lestari (HML) completing the first overburden cut in Pit 3.

The company said on Wednesday that two mining fleets were operating on site as part of HML’s sequential ramp-up plan. The remaining two fleets were expected to begin work by early December.

All four fleets – comprising 50-t class excavators and associated ancillary equipment – have already been fully mobilised to BBM.

Cokal noted that the phased startup follows the mine plan sequencing developed jointly with HML and is aimed at ensuring an efficient, steady lift in output.

The milestone marks the transition to full contractor-led activity at BBM and aligns with Cokal’s strategy to progressively increase production in line with improving metallurgical coal market conditions.

The company said it would continue providing operational updates as the ramp-up advanced.
